Bowers and Merena to Present More Than 900 Coin Rarities in Beverly Hills this Saturday, September 13

Highlights Include Near-Gem 1867 Proof Shield Nickel with Rays in PCGS Proof-64 and Superb Gem 1931-S Buffalo Nickel in PCGS MS-67

IRVINE, Calif. – Bowers and Merena Auctions, America's leading rare coin and currency auction house, will host their Beverly Hills Rarities Sale on Saturday, September 13, 2008, at The Tower Beverly Hills, prior to the Long Beach Coin, Stamp & Collectible Expo. Lot viewing for the entire auction is scheduled for Thursday through Saturday, September 11-13. The catalog includes more than 900 exceptional coin rarities

Topping the list of highlights is Lot 120, a lovely Near-Gem 1867 Proof Shield Nickel with Rays graded Proof-64 by PCGS, one of perhaps just 35 to 45 coins extant. The proof 1867 Shield Nickel with Rays is a very rare issue, long included as an integral part of the regular-issue Shield Nickel series, a fact that places extreme demand on the surviving examples. This lovely near-Gem is at the upper reaches of the assigned grade, the surfaces virtually distraction free and quite smooth in outward appearance. It is fully struck with uniform mint brilliance that sparkles beneath a dusting of pale golden-silver tinting.

One of the two highest-graded 1931-S Nickels on the PCGS Population Report also stands out at Lot 168 in PCGS MS-67. Lovely technical quality and eye appeal in a ‘31-S Buffalo Nickel, this coin is so well preserved that it has gone straight to the top of the PCGS grading scale for the issue. Sharing the MS-67 grade level with only one other example, this Condition Census Superb Gem is overlaid in soft, billowy, satin-textured luster that is as full as the day the coin fell from the dies.

Also worthy of special mention is Lot 49, an extraordinary Pop 2/0 1895 Indian Cent in PCGS MS-67 Red. The surfaces literally glow with rich reddish-orange color and an incredibly thick, frosty texture from the dies. A sharp strike is no less praiseworthy, and the surfaces are so well preserved as to be devoid of even the most trivial distractions.
