The American Gold Eagle series began in 1986 and features the timeless design of Augustus Saint-Gaudens on the obverse, with a reverse design by Miley Busiek. Struck in four denominations in 22 karat (.917 pure) gold, they remain one of the world's most popular bullion issues. The quarter ounce size bears a face value of $10, and includes several scarcities. Among them are the 1999-W struck from Proof dies, and the 2008 Burnished pieces struck at West Point. Populations for some of the earlier (pre-2002) dates in MS-70 are low, so achieving a top Set Rating can be challenging.
