Jaime Hernandez: This date is the second year of issue for the Jefferson Nickel series. It has a very small mintage of 3,514,000 and it's the second lowest mintage nickel in the series. Only the 1950-D Nickel has a lower mintage. Despite having a slightly higher mintage than the 1950-D nickel, the 1939-D brings a higher premium since very few coins were saved and many of them got lost in circulation.
