Ron Guth: 1878 VAM 5 is a TOP 100 variety.  It is easily identified by the doubling at the base of RIB in PLURIBUS.  The obverse die was only used on this variety, while the reverse die appears on several.  The 1878 VAM is a relatively scarce variety.  PCGS has graded over 50 examples (as of April 2011) of the 1878 VAM 5, the finest of which is a single MS-65.  PCGS has not yet graded any PL or DMPL examples.
