Expert Comments

David Akers (1975/88): The 1872 is one of the rarest Philadelphia Mint issues of the Liberty Head type. Only the 1875 and 1873 are unquestionably rarer and the 1872 compares favorably to the famous 1858 as well as the lower mintage dates as 1863, 1876 and 1877. Overall, business strikes are only a little more common than proofs.
