Expert Comments

David Akers (1975/88): This is one of the rarest of the early Eagles but, despite the similarity in the mintages of this and the 1798/7, 7x6 Stars, the 1798/7, 9x4 Stars is not nearly as rare as the 7x6. In fact, based on the auction appearances, this issue is not really as rare as generally believed and has appeared with the same frequency as the 1804 and less often than the underappreciated 1797 Small Eagle. Most known specimens grade from VF to AU but several strictly uncirculated examples are also known.
