David Hall: The 1916-S is fairly avaiable in circualted grades. In mint state it is scarce, but usually available for a price. In mint state condition, there are about as many weak band examples as fully struck band examples. The 1916-S is unique among Mercury dimes in that the strike is often weakest at the lower diagonal band, not the center crossbands. Luster can be satiny or white frosty and toning is not unusual.
