In 1938, designer Felix Schlag immortalized Thomas Jefferson, America’s third President and the author of the Declaration of Independence, on a five cent piece that has been known ever since as the Jefferson Nickel. Collectors love this set because it is easy to complete and contains no expensive rarities. Three (and possibly four) of the 73 coins in this set are made of an unusual alloy in which Silver replaced Nickel from 1942 to 1945 so that Nickel could be freed up for military uses during World War II. Top condition rarities abound, with attention focused on the number of steps leading up to Monticello. If you’re a new collector, or a collector with a limited budget, this is a great place to start.
