In 1787, Massachusetts began minting Half Cents and Cents – the first American coins to bear the word "CENT." The obverse design features an American Indian holding a longbow in one hand and an arrow in another. The reverse features a heraldic eagle – a design that was later copied on official U.S. coins. In general, the quality of the Massachusetts coins was above-average for a colonial issue, with nicer planchets and bolder strikes. The Basic Set consists of four coins, including one of each denomination issued in 1787 and 1788. This is an affordable set that, with a little determination, can even be completed in Uncirculated condition.
