The Oaxaca Mint was located in the southern part of Mexico, in the State of Oaxaca. The quality of the coins produced at this Mint is generally poor and the costs of this Mint were higher than at the other Mexican Mints. However, the Oaxaca Mint served a valuable purpose in turning locally mined silver (and to a much lesser extent, gold) into coins, thus eliminating the need for secure transport from other mints. Once rail service was established between Oaxaca and Mexico City, the need for a mint at Oaxaca evaporated and the operation was closed in 1893.
