Owner's Comments

Laibstain. A very nice toned and well struck coin, from late 1800's. Strike is typical of many of the issues produced in San Francisco. Tied with two others for second finest for the issue. Many coins from San Francisco from 1898-1900 were sent to the Philippines and many circulated there in commerce. This led to heavy circulation of these issues, and many were cleaned. Finding nice high-grade circulated examples of the half dollar and quarter issues is very difficult, as are mint state examples. There are collectors that seek ouf the so-called Philipine-hoard dates, knowing how hard they are to find. Population numbers support the notion of low numbers of surviving nice coins.

Expert Comments

David Akers: Like the 1898-O, this is a very underrated issue, especially in...Gem condition...
