David Hall: The three Columbia, South Carolina commemoratives were minted in quantities sufficient to satisfy the demand of buyers at the time. Unlike other issues of the era, there appears to have been very little hanky-panky with this issue and these coins were very well distributed. Most collectors find the coins attractive and they are fairly easy to obtain in Gem condition and this, coupled with their very modest pprice, makes them quite popular.
There were 9,007 Philadelphia Mint issues distributed. The coins were apparently handled with care as most examples have very few marks and abraisions. Luster is typically quite frosty/satiny.
