There are three major sub-types in this series, but for the most part the "type one" coins of 1851-53 are uncollectible due to their extreme rarity. How rare are they? PCGS has graded one 1851 (a beautiful Proof 66 from the Eliasberg collection) and zero examples of 1852 and 1853. In fact, no 1853 Proofs are believed to exist! The "type two" coins of 1854-58 are quite a formidable task, as well. There are just over 30 examples of the 1858 certified in PR65 or better, and 1858 is considered the "common date" of the second type! This great series is a little out of favor at the moment, so it offers excellent value.
Notes: The 1869/8 was categorized as a major variety and placed in this set on 10/24/14. This set has bonuses. Please see the Set Composition for a listing.
