Since its opening in 1854, the San Francisco mint has been in continuous operation for 160 years aside from a brief 12-year hiatus between 1956 and 1967. It has served as the country's No. 2 mint, and starting in 1968, has been the source of most of the nation's proof coins. Like most of our branch mints, during its early years, it struck exclusively silver and gold coins. But in the early 20th century, it added copper and nickel coins and struck a few Indian Cents and Liberty Nickels as those series were coming to a close. Almost as famous as its coins, is the old mint building itself. "The Granite Lady" as it is known, was constructed in 1874 and served till 1937, having survived the great earthquake and fire of 1906. While none of the coins in this set is an extreme rarity, the Seated Dollar will prove the most difficult as only two years are effectively available: 1859 and 1872.
