(Newport Beach, CA) - A 1917-S Type 2 Standing Liberty quarter-dollar now is part of numismatic marketplace history. On Monday, April 1, it was registered as the eight millionth coin submitted to Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), a division of Collectors Universe, Inc.
The coin is graded PCGS MS-67 Full Head, and the historic serial number, 08000000, is printed on the encapsulation holder's insert.
"Everyone at PCGS is thrilled about this milestone," said David Hall, PCGS President and Founder.
"We started in February 1986, and getting eight million coins submitted obviously shows we are the authentication and grading service of choice for a lot of collectors and dealers. We look forward to continuing to serve the grading needs of the numismatic marketplace, and to continue to launch new innovations in the tradition of our Population Reports and Set Registry, to make the rare coin market more efficient and more fun," said Hall.
The milestone coin was submitted by long time PCGS dealer, Larry Whitlow of Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois.
Hall stated: "It's appropriate that the eight millionth coin is one of the finest examples we've graded of the issue, and the submitter is one of the top specialists in the series."
Hall personally telephoned Whitlow to surprise him with the news that his coin was something extraordinary for the company and to share the significant achievement with him.
Among the other 7,999,999 items submitted to PCGS the past 17 years are several of the world's most valuable rare coins, including the $4.14 million Child's specimen 1804 Bust dollar (PCGS PF-67), and the finest known 1913 Liberty Head nickel (PCGS PF-66) that sold for $1.84 million at a public auction in 2001.
PCGS estimates the total declared value of the eight million coins submitted is almost $11 billion.
