2009 marks the 200th Anniversary of Lincoln's birth, and the 100th Anniversary of the Lincoln cent. The U.S. Mint is celebrating this historic coin by producing four new reverse designs. A new design will be released approximately every three months.

2009 marks the 200th Anniversary of Lincoln's birth, and the 100th Anniversary of the extremely popular Lincoln cent.

It's hard to imagine that this venerable coin series will be 100 years old this year. I remember spending Lincoln cents at the corner store, buying peanut butter cups at three cents each. That was almost 25 years ago, but it still plays out so clearly in my memories. Also, this is the same coin my father and mother probably used at the grocery store approximately 30 years ago when change was used more frequently, not to mention my grandparents over 50 years ago. How time flies...

What better way to celebrate this historical coin than by producing the newly designed 2009 cents? There will be four different reverse designs used on the new 2009 Lincoln cents and a new design will be released approximately every three months.

The first cent will depict a log cabin reflecting Abraham Lincoln's earlier years in Kentucky.

The second cent shows an image of Abraham Lincoln reading a book when he worked as a rail splitter in Indiana.

The third cent depicts Abraham Lincoln standing in front of the State Capitol building in Illinois.

The fourth Lincoln cent will depict the Capitol Dome under construction.
