Bonhams Coins Medals and Banknote Auction Spotlights Several Important PCGS-Certified Rarities. Auction held August 31.

Los Angeles, CA – Bonhams, the third largest international fine art auction house, is pleased to announce the sale of several important PCGS-certified rarities in our upcoming August 31 Coins, Medals and Banknotes Auction in Los Angeles.

Paul Song, Bonhams Director of the Rare Coins and Bank Notes Department said, ''This sale begins with an extremely rare 1818 Texas (New Spain) 1/2 Real (Jola) graded PCGS XF45 and continues through the coinage spectrum to climax with PCGS certified examples of all four design types of the famous $4 Stella." Song notes that three of these are "gilt" copper patterns of this important issue and rarely offered in any condition.

The auction presents an 1811 Tall 5 Half Eagle, PCGS MS63 and a 1796 Eagle, PCGS AU58, two highly collectible, high grade early gold issues. Also offered and hugely in demand, several Saint-Gaudens twenty dollar coins, which include: MCMVII (1907) High Relief with Wire Rim, PCGS MS64; 1908-D With Motto, PCGS MS66; 1924-D PCGS MS64; and a rarely offered 1925-S PCGS MS62.

In addition, 1892 and 1893 original six piece proof sets (one cent to Morgan dollar) have been together since their issue dates and are similarly toned in beautiful, original hues of the rainbow. All have been individually certified by PCGS. Each set is being offered as a set only (not to be broken up).

As previously mentioned, the final numismatic highlights include two 1879 Flowing Hair $4 "Stellas," one graded PCGS Proof 62, the other is lightly circulated and grades PCGS Proof 45.

The remaining, seldom seen examples feature an 1879 Coiled Hair Gilt Copper Pattern, Judd-1639; an 1880 Flowing Hair Gilt Copper Pattern, Judd-1658 and finally an 1880 Coiled Hair Gilt Copper Pattern, Judd-1661. These three coins were certified by PCGS although it is their policy not to grade "gilt" patterns.
