Keith Zaner, editor of the "Trends" section of Coin World, posed these questions:
1. Just what do the values listed each week in "Trends" mean? 2. What do they indicate? His answers:
"For better understanding, it may be easier to state what the `Trends' section is not. `Trends' values are not bid or ask prices. They are not the final price or one which is inflexible. `Trends' values do represent `ballpark' estimates or ranges of current retail values for rare coins. A single `Trends' value is an established point from which a dealer, collector or investor can, if he chooses, deviate from to arrive at a market transaction price.
"For example, if a `Trends' value of $5,000 is listed for a particular coin, it is reasonable to assume that a seller (dealer, investor or collector) may request a price above, at, or below that dollar amount. The same holds true for the buyer. Price is contingent upon many variables which interact with one another. The weighted variables are pertinent to determining price.
"If the seller wants $5,500, then that is well within the ballpark. Even at $6,000, availability and demand may dictate this greater increase.
