Our Readers Ask

Question: How do you decide on the Red-Brown designation on copper coins? Is it based on a percentage or a majority of brown color?

Answer: Here's the definition of Red-Brown from the PCGS Lingo page: "A copper coin that has from 5 to 95 percent of its original mint color remaining (RB)." Thus, a Brown coin has less than 5% original red still remaining and a Red coin has more than 95% of the original red color still remaining.

Announcements

Quarterly Collectors Club Grading Special
In early 2007, the Mint introduced a new series of Presidential Dollar coins which featured a re-introduction of edge lettering, something collectors hadn't seen on coins since 1933. So, to commemorate this event, PCGS will accept any lettered edge U.S. coin for this quarter's Collectors Club Special. Possibilities include (but are not limited to) the following:
  • Half Cents and Large Cents (1793-1795)
  • Half Dollars (1794-1836)
  • Silver Dollars (1794-1803)
  • Saint Gaudens Double Eagles (1907-1933... yes, we'd be thrilled to certify your 1933 Double Eagle)
  • George Washington and John Adams Presidential Dollars (plain edge errors excepted)

This offer is valid for all Collectors Club members.
