Top Numismatic National Treasures in PCGS Holders

With the $7.395 million sale of the unique 1787 Brasher EB-on-Breast Doubloon, the most valuable certified U.S. gold, silver and copper coins are in PCGS holders.

"The most recent national numismatic treasure in the news is the one-of-a-kind Brasher Doubloon with designer Ephraim Brasher's initials, EB, on the eagle's breast. This coin is graded PCGS AU50. The Brasher Doubloon has been sold by a large numismatic firm at a record price for any certified, encapsulated gold coin, nearly $7.4 million," said Don Willis, President of PCGS.

"It's been a record-setting year for top rare coins, and we are pleased to see that the most valuable certified United States gold, silver and copper coins were all certified for authenticity and graded by PCGS," said David Hall, President of Collectors Universe and Founder of PCGS. Read More...

PCGS CoinFacts 1933 $20 Regular Strike

Since the launch of PCGS CoinFacts,™ we have been hard at work updating and expanding the site's information. Here's another recent example:

David Akers (1975/88): The 1933 Double Eagle was the last gold coin struck for circulation by the U.S. Mint. Before they were legally released, a Presidential order was issued on March 6, 1933 prohibiting banks from paying out gold coins or gold certificates. Nevertheless, a small quantity of 1933 Double Eagles did get out of the Mint and in the late 1930s and early 1940s, there were a number of private transactions involving the sale of 1933 Double Eagles.

Colonel James W. Flanagan, for instance, purchased one for his collection for $2,200 (a very high amount for a coin at that time). Read More...
