So-Called Dollars of the World’s Columbian Exposition
By Charles Morgan and Hubert Walker
The classic commemorative period began in 1892 with a Congressional Act authorizing the production of specially-designed half dollars made up in the likeness of Christopher Columbus, to be sold at $1 a piece with the proceeds going to help fund the World’s Columbian Exposition, a World’s Fair held in Chicago, Illinois. Wyckoff, Seamans, and Benedict, manufacturers of Remington typewriters, publicly offered $10,000 for the first coin struck.
Auction Prices Realized
By Ron Guth
Collectors rely on numerous resources to determine the value of their coins, two of which are built and maintained by PCGS. One is the PCGS Price Guide; the other is Auction Prices Realized (APR). APR is a listing of the results from auction sales of individual coins by all the big auction houses, plus online venues such as eBay. As of this writing, the APR contains the sale records for a whopping 2,511,544 coins. No one else has an archive this large or this comprehensive.

First settled by the British well over a century before independence was declared, America had a strong bond with Europe, especially Britain.
A Discussion of Five Mints
