The Controversial 1909 V.D.B. Lincoln Cent
The 1909 Lincoln cent made its debut on August 2, 1909, and immediately created a sensation. Soon, the initials V.D.B. on the reverse, the signature of engraver Victor David Brenner, were criticized for their prominence. Soon, they were removed, isolating the 1909 V.D.B. and a related issue with an "S" mintmark, struck in San Francisco, as the only cents of their type. Today, the 1909 V.D.B. cent is plentiful and inexpensive, although the San Francisco Mint version, the 1909-S V.D.B. is elusive.

Question: Since 1986, I have had in my possession a Lincoln penny dated 1985 that has no copper coat. It looks just like a 1943 penny. How can I verify that this is not just a penny whose copper coat has been removed?

Answer: This would be considered an unplated zinc Lincoln Cent and can be so recognized by PCGS under it's Mint Error program. There have been instances of plating performed outside the mint, but these can be quickly identified.

Show service will be available Wednesday, May 2* and Thursday,

Special Show Service -- $60 per coin valued at $1,500 or less

Standard Show Service -- $100 per coin
Coins submitted for Show Service on Wednesday will be returned Friday morning. Coins submitted for Show Service on Thursday will be returned Saturday morning. Show service submissions will also be accepted on Friday and Saturday to be graded at our office and mailed to you on Monday, May 7.

Have your coins graded by PCGS and save on one-way postage! You may submit your coins at the show to all PCGS grading service levels. Submissions will be accepted from Wednesday, May 2*, through 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 5. Your PCGS-graded coins will be mailed to you following the show.

*Wednesday, May 2 is Dealer Set Up Day. We'll be accepting submissions from 2 p.m. - 8 p.m. on May 2. Check with the show promoter, Sandy Gulde 480-998-4001 for access to the facility. Show Hours are as follows:
