Several weeks ago we asked our readers to choose the most beautiful commemorative coin and the Oregon Trail won in a landslide. This week we'd love to hear from you regarding the most beautiful of the 20th century regular issue non-gold coins.

  1. The Buffalo nickel. The magnificent Indian portrait paired with the noble bison.
  2. The Mercury dime. That's Mrs. Wallace Stevens on the obverse representing Winged Liberty. No wonder we call it the "Mercury" dime instead!
  3. The "type one" Standing Liberty quarter. Controversial, yes, but definitely a strong contender in this contest.
  4. The Walking Liberty half dollar. Was A. A. Weinman a genius of design, or what?
  5. The 1921 Peace dollar. A sharply struck gem with the "High Relief" details...magnificent!

Question: What is a "store card"? I've seen this term but can't learn what it means.

Answer: This term generally refers to a metallic token, such as a Civil War token or a Hard Times token, bearing the name of a specific merchant, store, tradesman, or business. Thus, an 1844 copper cent-sized token bearing the name of J. Cochran, bellfounder, of Batavia, New York, is considered to be a store card. Somewhat related are "patriotic" and "political" tokens, usually with motifs relating to political figures, issues, or sentiments.

BIDDING HAS RESUMED AGAIN IN "TREE MANY FEATHERS" AUCTION

The Tree Many Feathers Collection offered by Bowers and Merena Galleries has been rescheduled for November 28th in Baltimore, Maryland just prior to the Suburban Washington/Baltimore Coin Convention and the sale of the Collections of Phillip Flannagan, scheduled to commence on November 29th. Lot viewing for both sales will begin on Tuesday, November 27th at the Marriott Inner Harbor Hotel. In addition, the lots from the Tree Many Feathers sale will be on display at the Long Beach Convention at the Bowers and Merena bourse table to make it easier for interested bidders to view.     *Wednesday, October 3 is Dealer Set Up Day. We'll be accepting submissions from 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. on October 3. Check with the show promoter for access to the facility.
