How Much Does It Cost To Grade Coins With PCGS and How Does It All Work?

PCGS offers two different ways to submit coins either by joining the Collectors Club or going through a PCGS Authorized Dealer. Both will get your coins graded. Below are overviews of each method so you can decide which is best for your situation.

To submit your coins yourself without having to go through an authorized dealer, PCGS requires you to purchase one of four different memberships. Here is a chart outlining the benefits you receive with each Collectors Club Membership :

* Vouchers may be used for U.S. or World coin submissions.
* All coins must be submitted at once, fall under same type of submission, and be accompanied by the voucher
* Voucher offer is not valid for Mint Errors, Special Issues, First Strike fees, Variety Attribution fees or coins valued over $3,000

*Note: Offer subject to change

If you would rather not purchase a membership to have your coins graded yourself, you also have the option of submitting through a PCGS Authorized Dealer. With this method, you would pay an authorized dealer the grading and return shipping and handling fees so that they can send your coins to us on your behalf using their account. This is a great method if you only have one or two coins you'd like to send in and you have a PCGS Authorized Dealer in your area that you feel comfortable with and trust. You can search for an authorized dealer in your area by clicking here.

After you've used your voucher submission, the cost for grading mainly depends on type of coins and the declared values for the coins you are sending in. (You must put a declared value down for each coin you are sending in. This is used mainly as an insurance value for your Coins) If you are having trouble deciding what your declared value should be, our Price Guide is a good tool to use and can give you an idea of what your coin's might be worth. Below is the PCGS Fee Schedule.

The following services are available for both U.S. and non-U.S. coins (World coins). Effective November 15, 2011 - All non-U.S. (World) coins minted prior to 1955 must be submitted through our Secure Plus service.

All coins, both U.S. and Non-U.S. (World), minted since 1955 and valued below $1,000 can be submitted under the Modern Service level.

* $12 per coin that makes the minimum grade assigned by you. There is a 60% minimum. If less than 60% of the coins make the grade, then you will be charged $5 each for coins that failed to meet the minimum. NOTE: The Bulk Submission Agreement Form must be signed and returned to PCGS before any bulk submissions. This form needs to be completed annually and will remain on file with PCGS.

You'll notice that each service level has a maximum coin value that can be submitted under that service. If some of your coins exceed that maximum, you would have to put those on a separate form under a higher-priced service level. For example, if you have three coins that you are valuing at $1,500 each, those can be put under the “Regular” service level since it is good for coins valued up to $3,000 each. If you have another coin that you value at $7,000, you would have to put that coin on its own submission form under the Express service since it can accommodate coins valued up to $20,000 each.

The best way to approach this process is to first figure out what type of coins and the declared values for the coins you would like to submit. With this information, you will be able to determine the correct service level.

When calculating submission expenses, you will include grading fees, return shipping cost and $8 handling fee (per submission form). PCGS uses the chart below to figure out the return shipping amount based on the number of coins in your submission and the overall declared value for your coins.
