Expert Comments

David Hall: The 1834 Large 8, Large Stars, Medium Letters is by far the rarest of the regular strike (i.e. non-proof) 1834 large cents. There is only one die (Newcomb 5). This coin is rare in all grades with probably less than 100 known total. There are very few mint state examples, the fabulous Naftzger collection had a Brown Gem graded MS65 by PCGS. Not only is this the rarest 1834 variety, it is one of the rarest of all Coronet Head large cent major varieties.
