Expert Comments

David Akers (1975/88): This date is one of the five most common Liberty Head Double Eagles from the San Francisco Mint; only the 1898-S and 1904-S are more common. Although it is less rare as a date, the 1899-S is similar in condition rarity to the 1891-S and 1897-S. The 1899-S is readily available in average uncirculated (MS-60) condition and choice mint state examples are only moderately scarce. Gems are very scarce but a few truly superb examples of this date are also known to exist.
