Owner's Comments

Estimated grade. USA & DATE HOLEY GOLD DOLLAR OBVERSE/DOLLAR WITH WREATH BELOW REVERSE. Obverse with USA above and 1852 below. The reverse has DOLLAR above and a wreath below. Gold, PE, high R-7. Dr. Wilkison owned two of this pattern.

Expert Comments

David Akers (1975/88): Description: Obverse. Same as J-137, that is, USA above the perforation and the date below. Reverse. DOLLAR above the perforation and a wreath below.

Comments: A very small quantity was struck, certainly less than ten pieces and more likely only six or seven. Although superior to J-137, the overall quality of striking and planchet preparation was substandard for the U.S. Mint.

There are only twelve auction records for J-141 since 1875, but exact pedigrees are impossible to establish. F.C.C. Boyd had a specimen in his collection and this is one of the two pieces now owned by Paramount International Coin Corporation who purchased it from Dr. Wilkison. Wilkison, in turn, had acquired it along with 20 other gold patterns from the Judd collection in 1962.

There was a specimen of J-141 in the 1970 DiBello sale conducted by Stack's. However, it is possible that this is the same as one of the last three specimens listed below.
