Expert Comments

David Akers (1975/88): The 1856 is very scarce in all grades and most known specimens grade only VF or EF. A small number of AU examples are known and there are a few uncirculated specimens known to exist. I have seen three that were choice and there may be a couple of others. The 1856 is more rare than the 1847, 1849, 1850, 1853 and 1855 and is comparable in overall rarity to the 1848 and 1852 although it is not as rare in uncirculated as the latter two.
