Expert Comments

David Akers (1975/88): The 1855-S is very rare in any condition and all of the relatively few known examples grade only VF or EF. No specimen is known in uncirculated condition and I have not seen or heard of one that was even close. Both in overall rarity and "condition rarity", the 1855-S is one of the rarer dates of the series ranking in the top twenty dates according to rarity by average grade and in the top quarter of the series according to frequency of appearance.
