David Akers (1975/88): The 1866-S No Motto Eagle is one of the rarest dates in the series. In my auction survey, it ranked third in rarity according to frequency of appearance at auction behind only the 1875 and 1864-S and ahead of such well know rarities as the 1798/7 7x6 Stars, 1858 and 1933. I don't feel it is the third rarest date overall, however, but it certainly is very rare, particularly in EF or better condition. Most of the few examples I have seen graded no better than VF but I do know of one specimen that grades very close to uncirculated.
