David Akers (1975/88): After a 34 year hiatus from issuing Eagles, the Mint resumed production of this denomination in 1838. Because it is the first year of a two-year-only type, the 1838 Eagle has long been very popular and desirable. It is also rare in all conditions and high grade specimens are very difficult to obtain. The typically available 1838 is only VF-EF and strictly uncirculated specimens are extremely rare.
