Expert Comments

David Akers (1975/88): I have seen a few more of this date than I have of the 1858-S, 1859-S or most of the other S Mint Half Eagles of the 1860's and early 1870's but it is still a very rare coin in any condition and, to the best of my knowledge, unknown in full mint state. Personally, I have never seen a strictly graded AU specimen, and VF should be considered typical. Like all S Mint Half Eagles from 1858-1876, this date is very underrated.
