Expert Comments

David Akers (1975/88): The mintage of this date is only about a third of the mintage of the 1865-S, but it is of almost exactly the same overall rarity. No specimens called AU or Unc has ever been offered at public auction (PCGS CoinFacts editors note: This was written in 1980), and although I have seen one choice AU piece in a private west coast collection, I know of no others close to that level. Fine and VF are the grades to expect when attempting to locate this coin.
