Expert Comments

Ron Guth: The 1848 Half Dime has proven to be an elusive rarity in Proof condition.  Previous estimates of fifteen survivors appear to be overstated, as only six examples have been positively identified in recent years.  Two are in institutional collections and one has been off the market since 1999.  The best of the two examples owned by Eliasberg sold as an NGC PR66CAM in 2013, where it realized a record price of $62,250.  The next best example appears to be the Pittman-Gardner PCGS PR64.
