Expert Comments

Ron Guth: The 1857 Proof Silver Dollar is a rare coin with an estimated mintage of 75-100 pieces.  These were sold both individually and as part of Proof sets.  Approximately three dozen examples are known today, with most of them grading at the PR63 level.  Cameo Proofs are extremely rare and they represent approximately one fifth of the total population.  No Deep Cameo examples are known, and they may not exist at all.  The finest example is the NGC PR66+ sold in 2015 as part of the Eugene Gardner Collection, and which reappeared in 2016.
