Expert Comments

David Akers (1975/88): Virtually identical in rarity to the Type II and actually the second most common of all gold dollars from the standpoint of total number of appearances in our 192 auction catalogue survey. Despite their high price, choice uncirculated specimens are readily available. Almost all of them have a very weak 8 in the date, as well as weakness in LL of DOLLAR. Even several proofs that I have seen of this date exhibited this weakness.
