Expert Comments

David Akers (1975/88): This is the first year that a substantial number of proof quarter eagles were struck. However, despite a reported mintage of 112 proofs, it is probable that the majority of them were melted since the 1860 quarter eagle is really just as rare in proof as the 1862, which had a mintage of only 35 pieces.
