Expert Comments

David Akers (1975/88): This date is rare and underrated in all grades. Strictly uncirculated examples are very rare and most available specimens grade only VF or EF. The 1851 is slightly more rare than the 1848 and is considerably more rare than the 1847, 1847-O or 1849. It is in the same general rarity class as 1840, 1841, and 1843.
