Ron Guth: In 1837, the U.S. Mint introduced a new Half Dime and Dime, both with Christian Gobrecht's Seated Liberty design (these beautiful little coins are often called "mini-Gobrechts" after the new silver dollars of 1836). 1837 Half Dimes are found with either Large or Small Dates. Neither variety is rare, but the Large Date version is more than twice as plentiful (according to the April 2012 PCGS Population Report). Collectors should have no difficulty finding Mint State examples up through MS65, but this date becomes very scarce in MS-66, and extremely rare in MS67. The finest examples certified by PCGS include three PCGS MS67s.
