Expert Comments

David Akers (1975/88): The proof mintage for the 1903 was the highest of any Liberty Head Double Eagle. However, the 1903 is certainly not the most common proof. Perhaps some of those minted were later melted or maybe the attrition rate for the 1903 was higher than usual.
