This Georgia branch mint started striking coins in 1838, the same year that Charlotte and New Orleans began their production. The Civil War ended all coinage from these three Southern mints with only New Orleans ever striking coins after 1861. Only gold dollars, quarter eagles, three dollars, and half eagles were struck in Dahlonega and they have been popular with collectors for years. The key to the basic type set is the three dollar issue, as they were struck only in 1854, are extremely rare in Uncirculated condition, and excessively rare with full dentils. The other denominations are available, but all are scarce to rare in Uncirculated condition. The issues from this extremely popular branch mint have been widely collected for years, as noted, but there are enough of them to go around to complete this set.
