This series came into being as the result of one of the worst tragedies of the 20th century. In the first year the coin was struck in 90% silver, but the following year the composition was changed to an 80% silver outer core bonded to a 21% silver inner core. This silver “sandwich” continued through 1970, then was changed to copper-nickel, eliminating the silver content completely. A reverse showing Independence Hall was used during the bicentennial. This set contains major varieties for the series.
