goldberg auction 30 -- lot 13 1794 C-1b R6 Small Edge Letters G5. Glossy olive brown and chocolate. The planchet is nearly smooth showing just the lightest roughness in protected areas plus a shallow pit at the throat. No verdigris. The only significant contact marks are several small, light rim bruises on both sides. The 17 in the date is extremely faint while the 94 is weak but easily readable. The legends are complete except for weakness on HALF CENT. EDS, Manley state 1.0, prior to any die clashmarks. The small edge letters are clear except for the "A" before "DOLLAR" because it was weakened by a rim bruise. The only 1794 "B-girl" in the Carvin Goodridge collection. Weight 101.0 grains. Estimated Value $1,000-UP. Ex Jim McGuigan (purchased unattributed 3/1979)-Martin Baer-1989 ANA Sale, Bowers & Merena 8/9/1989:1091 (lot ticket

c-5a manley 2.0 rarity 4+ from the catalog -1794 (C-5a, R.4+) PCGS VG-10. Description: "79" are a little close and the reverse has a short fraction bar with "1" nearly touching the knot above, leading to attribution of C-5a. A markedly attractive copper despite much wear that has flattened the primary devices, all legends are very strong with the exception of the center of the denomination text on the reverse, and that is due in part to strike. Planchet quality is simply excellent, with no notable environmental damage, and only a plethora of small circulation marks denying absolute smoothness

1794 Low Relief Head, Small Edge Letters Cohen 6a 35048 1794 1/2C N1BN 4
Lot 482 1794 C-6a R5+ G4. Small Edge Letters. Several points sharper but there are a few shallow pitmarks or planchet voids on both sides, mostly at TY into the field before the face and at S-OF on the reverse. No verdigris, just some dull contact marks on both sides, none notable. The center of the reverse appears to bulge outward almost imperceptibly, but the date and legends are complete and easily readable, including HALF CENT. Mostly glossy dark chocolate brown with lighter steel brown and chocolate toning covering the devices. This example offers the eye appeal of a piece several points better than the net grade might suggest. The always-present bulge right of the date is strong and the reverse is rotated 25 degrees CW. Weight 99.9 grains. A quite acceptable lower-grade example of this very rare variety. Estimated Value $500-UP. Ex Jack Beymer.

None of these marks is significant,The notable ones are a thin diagonal nick under the eye, a vertical one left of the fraction, and a tiny rim nick above the F in OF. Glossy chocolate brown shifting to olive brown in protected areas. The planchet is smooth and void of corrosion or verdigris except for a small spot under the lowest curl. 1795 C-5b R4 Thick Planchet AG3. Struck on a planchet cut from a spoiled (or spare) large cent planchet. Glossy medium steel brown and light chocolate. Smooth and quite nice for the grade, just well worn. The only marks are a few small spots of darker chocolate and olive brown toning near the 1 in the date. The date is weak, as usual with the thick planchet strikes, but the 179 can be made out rather easily. The portrait and LIBERTY are clear, and the bisecting die crack across the reverse is obvious. from the catalog - 1795 C-6b R6 Thick Planchet VG8. A couple points sharper with extremely fine roughness in the fields and protected areas. A small, very shallow pit that contains traces of reddish verdigris is located in the field near the dentils before the nose, and this is the best identifying mark for the coin. The only contact marks are some barely visible hairline scratches under the date and in the field off the bust. Glossy reddish chocolate brown with lighter olive and chocolate toning on the devices. Looks better than it might sound. EDS, Manley state 1.0. This is the Breen plate coin for his state III and the Manley plate coin for his state 1.0. An important piece, at the lower end of the condition census for this tough sub-variety. Struck on a planchet cut from a spoiled large cent. Weight 118.4 grains. Estimated Value $2,000-UP. Ex Stack's store stock 12/1971-Roger S. Cohen, Jr. 10/1981-Ron Guth 12/19/1981-Jack Robinson, Superior 1/29/1989:1879 (lot ticket included).

1796 With Pole Cohen 2 1027 1796 1/2C N1BN 46
1796 C2 Liberty Cap Half Cent, With Pole, R4. This coin has been authenticated and graded by PCGS as GENUINE, with code #98 for damage. The coin exhibits G5+ details and great, medium brown color, but the planchet has been beat up and looks a bit wavy. However, the date is 100% BOLD and plenty of the reverse details are strong, too. I love key-date coins like this because although it has minor problems, the color and eye appeal is still decent, the date is completely bold, and the light damage makes the coin much more "affordable." YES, I know how crazy it sounds to call an $ggnnn.00 coin "affordable," but this is a 1796 HALF CENT folks!
