Earlier it had appeared in the 1885 Randall sale as lot 927 purchased by William H. Woodin, who sold it to Waldo C. Newcomer; B. Max Mehl sold the Newcomer holdings, this coin passing to Col. E.H.R. Green, B.G. Johnson and King Farouk. It was sold to Ambassador R. Henry Norweb, lot 237, of Sotheby's February, 1954 Palace sale of King Farouk's collection, who had been deposed in 1952.

Wilson sale as lot 79, bought by Virgil Brand. It passed to Jane Brand Allen and was sold as lot 280 in Bowers and Merena's first Brand sale in November, 1983.
