As the Civil War concluded, efforts got underway to retire the Fractional Currency notes and other stopgap measures taken due to the shortage of circulating coins during the war. A three-cent coin struck in a nickel alloy was introduced in 1865 to help alleviate the shortages and retire the three cent notes. Few Half Dimes and Dimes were struck in Philadelphia and even if they had been, they would have been quickly hoarded.
