This ten-piece set again includes four New Orleans issues in that they struck all four of the circulating silver pieces this year. While none are great rarities, both the New Orleans Half Dime and Dime are quite a bit tougher in higher grade than their Philadelphia counterparts. The ten additional gold coins for 1842 include four Quarter Eagles, four Half Eagles and two Eagles. Philadelphia struck only 2,823 Quarter Eagles this year, placing its value on par with the usually far more expensive "C" and "D" mint issues. Among the Half Eagles, the 1842-O is the key, although both large and small date varieties are found among the "C" and "D" mint coins, and the 1842-C Small Date is the rarest of the series.
