1798 Mint Set with Gold

The sporadic striking of denominations in the mint's early years lead to a small set for 1798. No Half Cents, Half Dimes, Quarters or Halves were made, leaving only a Cent, a Dime and two Dollar coins for 1798 - one displaying the Small Eagle reverse and the other showing the later Heraldic Eagle reverse. None of these are rare dates for their types, but it goes without saying that top grade early U.S. coins are always in high demand and short supply. There are three gold coins this year, and none are "easy." Perhaps the Half Eagle is the least expensive, but even it runs into the 15-20K range in AU. The Eagle is extremely scarce by virtue of very low original mintage as is the Quarter Eagle for the same reason.
