The tiny 1799 Copper and Silver Mint Set contains only two coins, one of which is the famous rarity - the 1799 Cent. Of unknown mintage quantity, it was recognized as early as the late 1850s as a very difficult to locate date. Struck on dark, poor quality copper and not saved in quantity, this date is avidly sought by dedicated collectors of early copper and choice, higher grade pieces escalate in value very rapidly above Fine. Apparently most of the mint's efforts that year went into the dollar coin, of which over 400,000 were struck. The Half Eagle and Eagle for 1799 should offer no great challenge aside from the already existing difficulty of locating nice early gold. While the Half Eagle is less common than later dates of the type, it remains available in both circulated and mint state grades, for a price. Even with the gold included, the Cent is still the key to this set.
