The 1996 $5 Uncirculated Smithsonian Commemorative Coin was issued to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Smithsonian. The Smithsonian is the largest museum in the world.

Obverse: The obverse of the coin features a bust of James Smithson, the donor and founder of the Smithsonian Museum. The obverse also has the  inscriptions, "For the increase and Diffusion of Knowledge, In God We Trust, 1846-1996, James Smithson," and the word" Liberty."

Reverse: The reverse of the coin displays a large sunbursts which is also the Smithsonian's logo. Underneath the logo it has the word "Smithsonian." Encircled around the design are the inscriptions, "United States of America, E Pluribus Unum," and "Five Dollars."
