Goldberg Auctioneers Auction February 2020 Pre-Long Beach U.S. & World Coin Auction #115 Feb-2020 Lot 50 1797 S-134 R4. PCGS graded AU-58. CAC.Glossy light to medium brown with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. Mint frost shows in the fields and protected areas on both sides and this cent has excellent eye appeal. The only marks are a dull tick on the shoulder, a small rim bruise under the 97, and a spot of darker toning near the leaf under the U in UNITED. M-LDS, Breen state IV, with two strong die cracks from the rim to the E in AMERICA, and the area between these two cracks is raised but not yet a real cud break. The field under the hair ribbons is depressed thanks to a lack of planchet metal in that area, and that caused the strike on the opposing left side of the reverse to be weak. Graded EF45 and tied for finest known honors with the ANS example in the Noyes census, his photo #23907. Bland says AU50 and finest known. Our grade is EF45. A nice example of the "Small Fraction" variety that probably deserves a separate listing in the "Redbook." Struck on a planchet with a partially beaded edge. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label.
